Gettysburg National Cemetery
built 200 days ago
Today, the Gettysburg National Cemetery is the final resting place for American veterans from all of this country's major wars and conflicts. The cemetery is ... the site of numerous monuments and memorials including the New York Monument, the first statue to Major General John F. Reynolds, and the "Friend to Friend Memorial" in the National Cemetery Annex. Among the interments in the cemetery are the remains of General Charles Collis, former commander of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry who built a summer home at Gettysburg, and Captain William E. Miller, 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry. Miller won the Medal of Honor for his bravery and initiative during the cavalry battle east of Gettysburg on July 3.
On Steinwehr Avenue adjacent to the historic 1776 Dobbin House Tavern and Gettysburg National Cemetery, guest accommodations are provided in three buildings furnished with 19th-century antiques and overlooking the site where President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. The Leister House has queen beds in its four rooms and one suite -- two have private porches; the Victorian House has one suite with a king-sized canopy bed and private porch; and the Remembrance House has one two-story suite and one second-floor suite, both with queen beds. Children age 5 and up are welcome.

The Gettysburg National Cemetery contains the remains of 3,555 Union dead, and federal legislation sponsored by Congressman Dan Sickles, the general who lost his leg during the battle, created the national burial ground. At another area in the cemetery, near where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his historic Gettysburg Address Nov. 19, 1863, veterans from subsequent wars are buried.
Gettysburg National Cemetery Four months after the Battle of Gettysburg the Gettysburg National Cemetery was dedicated. The Cemetery was originally owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, but was transferred to the United States Government in 1872. After purchasing the 17 acres of land on Cemetery Hill, Pennsylvania officials wanted to consecrate the grounds with appropriate ceremonies. The Honorable Edward Everett of Massachusetts was selected to present the oration for the occasion, as he was considered the most outstanding orator of the day.

Two major publications recently covered the preservation fight to save Neutra and Alexander's Cyclorama Building (1958-61) at Gettysburg National Military Park. The effort to save this structure, begun in 1998, is still active. A renewed campaign to save the building is underway, led by the Recent Past Preservation Network (www.recentpast.org) in cooperation with the Neutra Institute of Survival Through Design, DOCOMOMO U.S., the Society of Architectural Historians, and other allied organizations.
