Germany saw an increase of 57% in total FDI projects last year in comparison with 2005. This data is especially encouraging when viewed versus other European countries. Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Russia all saw reductions in projects on an annual basis. France only realized a modest increase.

Germany is committed to the Kyoto protocol and several other treaties promoting biodiversity, low emission standards, recycling, the use of renewable energy and supports sustainable development on a global level.[20] Nevertheless the country's carbon dioxide emissions per capita is among the highest in the EU but remains significantly lower compared to Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia or the United States. The reason why the carbon dioxide emission per capita is higher than in other European states is that Germany has a much higher industry production than many other European states. The discharge for many industrial goods counts for Germany while these exported goods are in fact used in other countries, which for that reason have a lower carbon dioxide emission.

Located in central Europe, Germany is made up of the North German Plain, the Central German Uplands (Mittelgebirge), and the Southern German Highlands. As part of Germany's "high-tech strategy," the country is making EUR800 million available for research and development in health research and medical technologies through the end of 2009.

Germany joined the other NATO allies in the military conflict in Kosovo in 1999. Before the Kosovo crisis, Germans had not participated in an armed conflict since World War II. Germany agreed to take 40,000 Kosovar refugees, the most of any NATO country.
