German Music: East Germany
built 180 days ago
In the 1960s, Germany was virtually missing from the map of rock music, but the late blooming of psychedelic music changed the German scene in a dramatic way. The boom of German rock relied on a number of enabling factors. There was a political background: Germany was one of the three countries (France and Italy being the other ones) that experienced the 1968 student riots on a massive scale. That phenomenon created a new class of (very young) intellectuals, and inspired a movement towards collective awareness. Environmental, pacifist and anti-nuclear issues became more relevant and openly discussed. It ... led to the actions of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group, which embodied the anger of that generation.

After World War II, German pop music was much influenced by music from USA and Great Britain. Apart from Schlager and Liedermacher, it is necessary to distinguish between pop music in West Germany and pop music in East Germany which developed in different directions. Pop music from West Germany was often heard in East Germany, had more variety and is still present today, while East German music had only little influence.

The politico-religious instability of the Reformation may be to blame for the decline of German keyboard music from the beginning of the sixteenth century until the published collections of Elias Nicolaus Ammerbach, organist at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. In his printed tablatures of 1571, 1575 and 1583 (the earliest in Germany), he initiated the particular form of notation which remained dominant until the eighteenth century. (Occasionally, J. S. Bach availed himself of its facility - in his Orgelbüchlein, for instance - for reasons of space). A lighter form of the dignified pavan, the passamezzo (literally, a step and a half) was the most popular dance of the sixteenth century. Ammerbach's present example employs a standard melody of Spanish provenance.

Germany has a huge electronic music scene. The band Kraftwerk was one of the first bands in the world to make music entirely on electronic equipment. Well-known but not accepted by the mainstream music scene is controversial band Scooter. Recently a few electronica artists have become successful in the mainstream, such as Xavier Naidoo, Blümchen and MIA. Artists on the cutting edge of German-language techno include Ich + Ich and Klee.
