Geraldo Rivera: Iraq War
built 197 days ago
If he did not, if he fabricated that story, Geraldo Rivera has been disrespectful to the profession of journalism and to other war corespondents. He ... has shown great irreverence to the soldiers who died on that hallowed ground.

[One] controversy arose in early 2003, while Rivera was embedded with U.S. military personnel in Iraq. During a Fox News broadcast, Rivera began to disclose an upcoming operation, even going so far as to draw a map in the sand for his audience. The military immediately issued a firm denouncement of his actions, saying it put the operation at risk, and nearly expelled Rivera from Iraq. Two days later, he announced that he would be reporting on the Iraq conflict from Kuwait.[10]

Rivera is a veteran foreign correspondent who has been on the frontlines in virtually every international conflict since 1973. He has expertise in the Afghanistan region, covering the international drug wars of tribal territories in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. His vast war experience has spanned the violent coup in Chile and the Yom Kippur War to the civil wars in Guatemala, the Philippines and Nicaragua as well as the ethnic conflicts in Lebanon (1980-83) and Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo (1998-1999). In 2000, he went to Colombia to cover the country’s civil war.

Rivera has visited the Jewish state numerous times since the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Echoing comments he made to Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Gail Shister, he told WND he considered relocating to Israel several years ago to advance his views on regional peace by becoming a citizen and running for a Knesset seat. But he says he had a change of heart after contemplating the move.

During the 2003 Iraq War, as an "embedded journalist" with U.S. forces in Iraq, Geraldo once reported on the position of Coalition Troops. He was hoping for interviews with the Iraqi Republican Guard.

Let's honor Rivera's legitimate feelings of dismay at the terrorism and the terrible toll that it took. Let's recognize that he has been to other battlefields as a war correspondent. Let's note that he has done award-winning journalism during his career.
