Geraldine Page won an OscarĀ® for her performance as Carrie Watts in this movie. She plays a mother living with her son, Ludie, and daughter in law, Jessie Mae, in a tiny apartment in Houston. The movie opens with mother and son, both unable to sleep on a summer night, reminiscing about earlier times. She is wistful, thinking of the place she grew up and raised her son. Ludie seems to want to just forget that time, but you can tell he loves his Mother and tries to be kind to her. His wife is a little cold, and is determined to claim her place as the woman of the house. There is a strong conflict between the two women, and he is caught in the middle.
Geraldine Page delivers a tour de force performance as Claire Marrable - oozing a charming menace and evil with every breath. Yet there are severe undertones of humour and one senses that the actors involved would have a good cackle after every take. Page's performance rates with the most vintage camp EVER. She obviously relished and thoroughly enjoyed the role.
An exponent of the Method style of acting, Geraldine Page was best known as a stage performer, particularly for her work in the plays of Tennessee Williams. Her performances in the film versions of Summer and Smoke, as a shy spinster hopelessly in love with her neighbor, and Sweet Bird of Youth, as an aging movie star suffering from a nervous breakdown, established her as a successful and important actress and indicated the wide range of her acting abilities.

In addition to winning Page her long-overdue Oscar®, the 1985 film version of The Trip to Bountiful brought Foote's play back into prominence. The play continues popular in revivals, with Lois Smith winning raves as Carrie in a 2005 off-Broadway production co-starring Foote's daughter, Hallie Foote. The title has become a part of popular culture, frequently turning up as a headline for restaurant reviews or in articles on nutrition and farm policy. In addition, the story has inspired Texas singer Nanci Griffith's 1998 album Other Voices, Too (A Trip Back to Bountiful) and a 1988 song by The Adventures.
