DALLAS (SMU) -- Dallas-based business leader Gerald J. Ford has been named chair-elect of Southern Methodist University's Board of Trustees. Ford was unanimously elected at the board meeting on May 11. He will succeed current Board Chair Ruth Altshuler when her term expires in spring 2002.

Gerald J. Ford serves as Chairman of the Board of First Acceptance Corp. He has been Chairman of the Board of Directors and a director of the Company since its formation in August 1996. Mr. Ford served as Chief Executive Officer from formation until July 2002. He currently is a private investor, and serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Southern Methodist University and as a trustee of Southwestern Medical Foundation. Mr. Ford was the Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and a director of Golden State Bancorp Inc., a holding company whose primary asset was its indirect ownership of California Federal Bank, from September 1998 through November 2002. Mr. Ford is a director of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, McMoRan Exploration Co., Scientific Games Corporation and Hilltop Holdings, Inc. (formerly Affordable Residential Communities Inc.).

Ford has acquired, consolidated and sold more than 40 financial institutions and financial services companies, including mortgage lenders and depository institutions. Mr. Ford was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Golden State Bancorp Inc. from 1994 through 2002 when the company was sold to Citigroup for $5.8 billion. Carl B. Gerald J. Ford was born in Pampa, Texas in 1944. He is the son of Coyle and Hazel (Del) Ford. Gerald presently resides in Dallas and is the father of four children.

Ford came to California in 1994 when he and Perelman bought loss-plagued First Nationwide Bank. He brought the thrift back into the black and then acquired Los Angeles' California Federal Bank, adopting its name.
