WHAT: On Friday, 7th October President George W. Bush will urge vaccine manufacturers to mass produce vaccines for the avian flu virus. A new DNA-based avian flu vaccine in development would offer a rapid response to the potential global health emergency during the first six months of a pandemic, when the majority of mortalities would occur. DNA-based vaccines are manufactured using recombinant bacteria rather than eggs, thereby enabling production of 150 million vaccine doses in the first three months of a pandemic flu outbreak. By contrast, traditional flu vaccines are manufactured in eggs (recent data suggests that an avian flu vaccine would require up to 2 eggs per dose or 4 per person). If a pandemic were to occur, a massive domestic bird slaughter would be underway making it highly unlikely that enough eggs would be available to produce sufficient traditional vaccine during the first six months of a pandemic.

Profession: In the West Texas energy business, George W. Bush started out researching who owned mineral rights. He later traded mineral and royalty interests and invested in drilling prospects. He had started his own oil and gas company by 1978, taking $17,000 from his education trust fund to set up Arbusto Energy (arbusto means Bush in Spanish). The company fell on hard times when oil prices fell. He made several attempts to revive the business, first by changing the company's name and later by merging with other companies. In 1983, Bushs company was rescued from failure when Spectrum 7 Energy Corporation, a small oil firm owned by William DeWitt and Mercer Reynolds, bought it. Bush became chief executive officer.

"George Bush worked to go to the Texas National Guard by the connection from his father … Then he went to Alabama. All he had in Alabama was one tooth filled, then they never found him again. Dick Cheney had five deferments. One, two, three, four, five deferments … Who are they to question an individual who won three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star?"
