George Strait (born May 18, 1952) is an American country music artist. He holds second place for most number one hits on all country music charts with a total of 51, second only to Conway Twitty.

Born on May 18, 1952 in Texas, George Harvey Strait has scored the highest number one hit singles, totaling to 52, second only to the late Conway Twitty. His mom left him after her divorce with his father at a very young age. Later, he began playing with a high school rock band with his preference gradually turning towards country music. He considers singers like Merle haggard, George Jones, etc as his early influences. In 1971, George joined the army and was stationed at Hawaii for two years. There he began playing country music with an army sponsored band named, Rambling Country.

Only Merle Haggard and Conway Twitty have produced more than his 37 number one Billboard hits. Of his record 70 nominations, Strait has received a total 38 awards from the likes of The Academy of Country Music; CMA; TNN Music Awards; TNN/Music City News; American Music Awards; and Music City News Country.

Surpassing Twitty’s benchmark 52 number one singles in country music is a huge landmark for Strait. Twitty’s tenure in that lofty po-sition—lasting since his last number one in 1986—seemed like something that was beyond challenge. Fitting, though, that it was broken by Strait—a huge Conway Twitty fan.
