In 1992, George Strait took his career in another direction and starred in the film Pure Country. The soundtrack for this film ended up being George Strait's biggest selling album. When 1995 rolled along, Strait released a box set and it most certainly lived up to its description. There were 72 songs, including his hit songs and other rare songs.

With his newest release of George Strait, it seems hard to imagine that George Strait's first hit was twenty years ago with the single, "Unwound" back in 1981. Since then, George has been laying down the law as far as the definition of country music goes. And he has a trophy room full of awards to prove it. According to Billboard Magazine, George is the most played country music artist of all time, and is the second most played artist on all charts next to Mariah Carey. His previous biggest claim to fame is with his album Ocean Front Property, which made music history in being the only album ever to debut at the number one spot. As a matter of fact, every single one of his albums have either gone gold, platinum or multiplatinum in sales, and he has had 24 of them.

George Strait continues his foray into the neo-traditionalist country style that he helped to pioneer on his 24th album, the simply titled George Strait. His voice has deepened over the years but he sounds just as alive as he did on his 1981 debut, and his songs hold just as much pain. The stark "If It's Gonna Rain" and the rich "She Took the Wind From His Sails" are testaments to the years that Strait has put into his craft and his unique ability to infuse a song with honest heart and soul. While some fans of "young country" might wonder where the screaming guitar solos and distorted fiddles are, fans of traditional country will no doubt be able to tell them where to go. ~ Zac Johnson, All Music Guide

The band put out a few albums on an independent label in the 1970s with no real success, but in 1979, Strait struck up a friendship with Erv Woolsey, who had worked with MCA Records. Woolsey talked MCA executives into hearing Strait sing, and he was signed to the label in 1980. His first single, "Unwound," reached the Top Ten in 1981, and it wasn't long before nearly every single Strait put out headed directly up the country charts. "Fool-Hearted Memory" marked the first of his dozens of number one hits when it climbed those charts in 1982.
