George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Blair, who was born in India and educated in England. As a young man he spent 7 years in Burma working for the Indian Imperial Police. He returned to Europe, and in 1933 published his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London, a first-hand account of his self-imposed poverty. He wrote dozens of political essays, but is most famous for his satire of Stalinist totalitarianism, Animal Farm (with its famous quote: "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others"), and for his description of modern dystopia in Nineteen Eighty-Four ("Big Brother is watching you.").

Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), known by the pen name George Orwell, was an English author and journalist. Noted as a novelist and critic as well as a political and cultural commentator, Orwell is among the most widely admired English-language essayists of the 20th century. He is best known for two novels critical of totalitarianism in general, and Stalinism in particular: Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Both were written and published towards the end of his life.

George Orwell was so extensively censored by his editors that his publishers in both England and the United States have decided to republish his complete works to reflect more accurately what he actually wrote. The books affected, including the political satires ''Nineteen Eighty-Four'' and ''Animal Farm,'' were changed because Orwell's publishers feared prosecution and lawsuits and because they felt public standards of taste would have found some of his work lewd.
