To the degree that George Montgomery Scott is remembered at all in Utah history, it is as Salt Lake City's first non-Mormon mayor (1890-1892). Scott himself... probably regarded his brief political career as the least of his major achievements, for his successful mayoral campaign was the only occasion upon which he ran for any public office in Salt Lake City during a residency of over thirty years. It was as a businessman, an Episcopal Church member, and public-spirited citizen that Scott probably wished to be remembered.

George Montgomery directs, stars, and co-scripts this routine, somewhat dated wartime drama set in the Philippines during World War II. Capt. John Larsen (Montgomery) has to go behind enemy lines at the beginning of the war to rescue a general from Japanese captivity. Instead of breezing through the assignment, Larsen discovers that the general has died, and it is almost impossible to get back to his rendezvous point. Filipino guerrillas help him out, but then he is handicapped by an injured woman in need of medical attention. The "steel claw" of the title is a hook that the one-handed Larsen fastens onto himself, a prosthetic straight out of Peter Pan. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

George Montgomery founded the first Montgomery's store at Alexandria in 1888, even before South Dakota became a state. The third generation of the family business expanded to Madison. Clark and Connie Sinclair, the fourth generation, eventually purchased the Madison store. In 1997, they opened a location in Sioux Falls. In August 2007, they purchased Abby Carpet in Sioux Falls. That location is currently being renovated and will open soon under the name Montgomery's Flooring and Drapery Studio.

George Montgomery, the youngest of 15 children, was born on August 27, 1916, and spent his formative years on a Montana homestead south of the Canadian border, not far from the areas where Charles Russell painted so vividly. During Montgomery's first year at the University of Montana, he left his architecture studies and moved to Hollywood. He became a film idol to millions, during the motion Picture industry's "golden years", following in the footsteps of actor and fellow Montanan, Gary Cooper. In addition to a demanding acting career, George found the time and energy to design and build a number of exceptional homes; craft fine furniture, create bronze sculpture and collect Western American artwork.
