At the time of his performance at The Freddie Mercury Tribute George already knew his Brazilian boyfriend Anselmo Feleppa was terminally ill. Unfortunately in March 1993 Feleppa died from an AIDS-related brain haemorrhage. Michael was unable to write for the next 18 months as a consequence of his grief and he went through a deep depression.

Michael is expected to receive a more lenient sentence because he entered a guilty plea and because it would be a first-time conviction. Normally, the maximum sentence in the case would be six months of jail time.
