George Frideric Handel: East Germany
built 656 days ago
George Frideric Handel, 1733 Handel adopted the spelling "George Frideric Handel" on his naturalization as a British subject, and this spelling is generally used in English speaking countries. The original form of his name (Georg Friedrich Händel) is generally used (naturally enough) in Germany and elsewhere, but he is known as "Haendel" in France, which causes no small grief to cataloguers everywhere. There was another composer with a similar name, Handl, who was a Slovene and is more commonly known as Jacobus Gallus.

In August, 1750, on a journey back from Germany to London, Handel was seriously injured when his carriage overturned. In 1751 he started to lose his eyesight. He died, in 1759, in London. The last concert he went to was his own Messiah. More than 3,000 mourners went to his funeral. He was buried with full state honours in Westminster Abbey.
Georg Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was born in the same country, Germany, in the same year as Bach, though the two never met. In total contrast to Bach, the cosmopolitan Handel travelled far and wide. After a few years in Italy learning his craft, he enjoyed enormous commercial and artistic success in London, where he settled and even (by a special Act of Parliament) became an English citizen.

Handel died on the day before Easter 1759, hoping to "meet his good God, his sweet Lord and Savior, on the day of his Resurrection." A close friend remarked, "He died as he lived—a good Christian, with a true sense of his duty to God and to man, and in perfect charity with all the world."
