The movies came calling in 1929, and Cukor joined Paramount (as dialogue director on the early talkie "River of Romance"). He worked on "All Quiet on the Western Front" (Universal, 1930) before debuting as a director on "Grumpy" (1930, sharing credit with Cyril Gardner). From there on, there was no holding Cukor back.

Cukor's legacy continued to grow with retrospectives of his work and a renewed interest in the social comedies of the World War II era. "There is an honorable place in the cinema for both adaptations and the non-writer director," noted Sarris, "and Cukor, like Lubitsch, is one of the best examples of the non-writer auteur."

Por otra parte, aunque sus películas ganaban premios, el trabajo de Cukor, en sus inicios, no obtuvo reconocimiento. Se le consideraba un director eficaz pero menor, pues se creía que el mérito de que sus películas obtuvieran buenos resultados estaba motivado por que se trataba, por lo general, de adaptaciones de grandes obras.
