George Clooney: Doug Ross
built 279 days ago
As the son of broadcast journalist Nick Clooney and the nephew of chanteuse Rosemary Clooney, George Clooney entered the world with show business coursing through his veins. Born May 6, 1961 in Lexington, Kentucky, the future E.R. headliner appeared at the tender age of five on his father's Cincinnati talk program, The Nick Clooney Show. This spot represented an anomaly... and George remained off-camera until his post-adolescent years. In lieu of acting, Clooney acquired and honed a sharp interest in sports - particularly baseball - and sought a career as a major leaguer with the Cincinnati Reds. When ousted from the tryout roster, Clooney launched himself as an onscreen presence, seemingly without effort.

Some of the industry’s best actors have come out of entertainer families, and George Clooney is no different. The son of talk-show host Nick Clooney, George’ smost famous relative has to be his aunt Rosemary, the famous singer/actress of such famous movies like “White Christmas.” But don’t get us wrong; George certainly isn’t in the same level as, say, a Pacino or a DeNiro, but he’s proven himself time and again as a respectable leading man. Getting his TV start at the age of five on his dad’s talk show, George later went on to graduate from Northern Kentucky University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, despite aspirations to become a pro baseball player for the Cincinnati Reds. In 1984, George was ironically cast in a medical comedy titled “ER” (no, not that one), and ... appeared in some of the most popular shows of the 80’s, including “The Facts of Life,” “TheGolden Girls” and “Roseanne.” In 1994, however, George got his big break when he was cast in the NBC-produced medical drama “ER” as pediatrician Dr. Doug Ross, and after a couple of years as television’s new heart throb he made the jump to film.

In a family fully familiar with the spotlight, George Timothy Clooney was born on May 6, 1961, in Lexington, Kentucky to TV anchor father Nick Clooney (b. January 13, 1935) and former first runner-up Miss Kentucky, Nina Bruce Clooney. His uncle is actor Jose Ferrer (b. January 8, 1912; died on January 26, 1992), his aunt is jazz singer Rosemary Clooney (b. May 23, 1928; died on June 29, 2002 from complications of lung cancer) and his cousin is actor Miguel Ferrer (b. February 7, 1955).
George Clooney's ancestors According to the 1880 American census, the great-great-grandfather of George Clooney, the actor, emigrated from Ireland and became a jeweller. His son Andrew became mayor of Maysville, Kentucky, and campaigned with the help of George’s singing aunts — Rosemary and Betty — who were radio stars. (source: Times Online)
George Clooney When George Clooney finally hit it big as pediatrician Doug Ross in the blockbuster television series "ER," critics hailed him a breakout star. But he was scarcely an ingénue; by then, he had starred in countless TV series (including "Roseanne" and "Sisters") and B movies.

George Clooney George Clooney set out to become a professional baseball player and came closer than most at making the big leagues. Good as he was, the Cincinnati Reds weren't ready to add him to their roster.
