George Carlin: New York
built 289 days ago
Comedy legend George Carlin isn't afraid to let anyone know his opinions on what's wrong with the world today. His most recent books, 'Napalm and Silly Putty' and 'When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops,' hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list. One of many self-styled contemporary folk singers to have come on the scene in the '80s, Vance Gilbert is blessed with a vocal range from angelic to uncanny, and his songs have won him praise from audiences and critics alike.

Carlin himself enjoys stealing, but not jokes. At one point, his office was cluttered from wall to wall with signs he'd yoinked from hotel lobbies, traffic intersections, police stations and restaurants. "I think it keeps the child alive in me. There's a thrill when you steal something in plain view of other people. When you drop a newspaper over a sign and walk away with it, or take something off a wall and the sound of glue ripping makes people turn around. Your heart is racing, it's a rush."

The turning point for Carlin came in Fort Worth, Texas (1959) in KOXL. Together with newsman Jack Burns, he started developing comedy routines for an eventual nightclub act that led to a two-year stint, playing leading clubs and making a first appearance on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar. They ... recorded an album, Burns & Carlin at the Playboy Club Tonight, on ERA Records.
