George Carlin: Audiences
built 289 days ago
George Carlin was one of the top 5 stand-up comics of all time, alongside Adolph Hitler, Jesus Christ, Timothy Leary and Jerry Seinfeld. Perhaps best known for his "7 Dirty Words You Hear All the Bloody Time on Children's Television", Carlin has made audiences laugh for years with his sharp, yet raunchy sense of smell.
George Carlin has released more than 20 comedy albums, written and performed 10 HBO specials, won three Grammys®, and earned four Cable ACE awards in a comedy career that spans over 30 years. He continues to entertain live audiences in theaters and concert halls nationwide.
Carlin was present at Lenny Bruce's arrest for obscenity. According to legend the police began attempting to detain members of the audience for questioning, and asked Carlin for his identification. Telling the police he did not believe in government issued IDs, he was arrested and taken to jail with Bruce in the same vehicle.[21]
[T]he Seven Dirty Words routine served to solidify Carlin's link with youth culture, enabling him to be the very first guest on Saturday Night Live. Carlin's performances became renowned for their unpredictability in the 1970s and early 1980s; sometimes he'd stalk off in the middle of the act if the laughs weren't there, other times he'd verbally abuse the audience, and still other times he wouldn't show up at all.
