George C. Scott

George C. Scott was an immensely talented actor, a star of screen, stage and television who was born in Virginia in 1927. At the age of eight his mother died and his father, an executive at Buick, raised him. In 1945 he joined the Marines and spent four years with them, no doubt an inspiration for portraying Gen. 'George S. Patton' years later. When Scott left the Marines he enrolled in journalism classes at the University of Missouri, but it was while performing in a play there that the acting bug bit him. He has said it "clicked, just like tumblers in a safe."

In this 1986 made-for-television sequel to the 1971 film that won George C. Scott his only Academy Award, the acclaimed actor once again portrays General George S. Patton. While the original film dealt exclusively with the legendary military man's life during World War II, this follow-up picks up shortly after that war. After being seriously injured in an automobile accident, Patton lies in a hospital bed at death's door. As a team of doctor's struggle to save the General's life, he flashes back to the early years of his life, recounting his time spent fighting in the first World War. The Last Days of Patton ... stars Kathryn Leigh Scott and Daniel Benzali. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Oscar-winning actor and maverick George C. Scott died last night at his Southern California home. He was 71. Authorities have yet to announce the cause of death. Best known for his 1970 portrayal of the controversial World War II general in the film biography "Patton" -- a role that won him an Oscar despite the fact that he refused the award on the grounds that actors shouldn't compete in what he termed a "meat parade" -- the Virginia-born Scott was a magnetic screen personality who rose through the ranks of his profession, first appearing in campus and summer stock productions and later starring on TV and the big screen. (Before turning to acting as a career he served in the Marine Corps for four years.) He was married five times, twice to the (late) actress Colleen Dewhurst, mother of his actor son Campbell Scott, 37. (George C. Scott's middle name was Campbell.) In all, the leading man had five children.
