Bush ... had his share of problems. Many historians believe that Bush ran a negative campaign in 1988 which affected his ability to govern the country. Congress refused to confirm his nomination of former Texas senator John Tower for secretary of defense. He inherited problems with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Other critics said he lacked vision and leadership. He also had a relatively inexperienced vice president in former Indiana Senator Dan Quayle.

Bush's tough-on-the-Constitution Attorney General John Ashcroft has been publicly mocking librarians for their opposition to provisions of the Patriot Act. Substance aside, that's just plain stupid. Didn't Mr. Ashcroft learn anything in school? Unless you're itching for trouble you should never, ever, mock a librarian.

John Kerry issued the following statement today, following President Bush’s veto of legislation that reauthorizes and extends the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The legislation passed the House and Senate by a broad bi-partisan majority, and Kerry pushed aggressively for additional SCHIP funds during the Senate Finance Committee’s development of the plan, and vowed to work hard to overturn the veto.
