George Bush: Florida Keys
built 267 days ago
In 1999, Bush officially began his campaign for the 2000 Republican presidential nomination, and quickly raised record campaign funding. Widely regarded as the favorite Republican hopeful, Bush won a majority of convention delegates in the primaries and became the GOP's candidate. Although he appeared generally to lead in the polls, he ultimately lost the popular vote to Democrat Al Gore. However, Bush secured the presidency with a victory in the electoral college when he won Florida by a narrow margin, having outlasted Gore's attempt to challenge the Florida vote-counting process in court. He ... became the first person in more than a century to win the presidency without achieving a plurality in the popular vote.

At this point the other fixed policy of the Bush Executive came into play: invading Iraq and Thatcherizing it, to place its key assets in foreign hands, or in the hands of a carefully selected oligarchy. Creating a series of nakedly false claims about the regime of Saddam Hussein, the dictator of Iraq, the Bush Executive proceded to force through a UN Security Council resolution 1441, and in early 2003 invaded Iraq.

Bush shakes hands with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin on September 2, 2005 after viewing the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Bush received 271 electoral votes to Gore's 266 as a result of the Florida outcome. However, he lost the popular vote by more than half a million votes[50] making him the first president elected without at least a plurality of the popular vote since Benjamin Harrison in 1888.[51]
As is typically the case in Florida, there was a gender gap in the data, with Bush doing much better among men, winning them by 13 percentage points. But even among women, Bush is winning narrowly, besting Kerry 48 percent to 45 percent.
