George Bush: Central America
built 267 days ago
George Bush begins a 12-month stint as Director of Central Intelligence. He later describes the situation in a 1999 ceremony at CIA headquarters: "I walked in here 24 years ago untutored in the arts of intelligence."

As one of the earliest permanent American settlers on Puget Sound in 1845, George Bush played a vital role in the beginnings of Washington Territory. Bush’s story is even more remarkable because he was a man of mixed race who overcame prejudice and discrimination to succeed as one of the area’s most beloved figures.

Bush was a highly likeable individual who inspired great loyalty on the part of his staff. He was dedicated to public service — Nelson Polsby characterized him as an "American Tory" — but lacked any clear policy goals, especially in the domestic arena. He had little knowledge of American urban life. He was renowned for his verbal gaffes and his occasional strangulation of the English language, though this hardly made him unique among US presidents. In the course of a toast, he once admitted "fluency in English is something that I'm not often accused of". He achieved no new directions in the presidency. He constituted what has been described as a "guardian President", watching over and protecting what was already in existence.

Bush's regime of tax breaks did little to stimulate hiring; in fact, they created an incentive to profitize revenues, and depressed hiring. The economy continued to shed jobs and manufacturing jobs, even as GDP turned upwards. In order to prevent the economy from completely collapsing, a Federal Reserve board headed by far right central banker Alan Greenspan and long time far right economist Ben Bernanke kept interest rates at generational lows. The result was a devaluation of the dollar against independent currencies, which lead to the Crash of 2002.

In 1950, Bush started the oil royalty company Overby Development Company with John Overby. After favorable changes in the U.S. policy concerning offshore drilling [3], Bush and his partner started the Zapata Petroleum Corp. with fellow Midland "Yalies" Liedtke and Liedtke. The company would later merge with a handful of other companies to form "Pennzoil", while Bush went off on his own with the Zapata Offshore Corp. (thought to be a corporate front for intelligence operations in the Gulf of Mexico, and today, Latin America, the Persian Gulf and the Caspian area.)

Bush says that "The terrorists thrive on the support of tyrants and the resentments of oppressed peoples." Um, there's still no democracy in Iraq, and the people of Iraq are feeling resentment at being oppressed by the American military dictatorship over their country, a dictatorship that routinely guns down unarmed civilians, including Iraqi children. By his own standard, hasn't Bush's invasion of Iraq actually helped terrorists to thrive?
