From All Movie Guide: With his pencil-thin mustache, the suave, gallant George Brent was one of Hollywood's most dependable leading men. A handsome, but never very exciting or dynamic lead, he played opposite all of Warner's greatest actresses, including Barbara Stanwyck and Olivia de Havilland he is best known for his work with Bette Davis, with whom (according to some sources) he had a lasting but secret off-screen romance. He began his career playing small roles as a child in Abbey Theater (Ireland) plays. During the Irish Rebellion he participated in subversive activities and had to be smuggled out of the country to Canada where he eventually toured with a stock company for two years, before moving on to New York. There he continued to appear with several stock companies, three of which he formed on his own. Brent then found work on Broadway in the late '20s, before heading for Hollywood to begin a career that spanned two decades.
George Brent was a son of a British officer and was originally known as George Brendan Nolan and was born in Shannonbridge. on March 15, 1904 He spent some time with The Abbey Theatre in Dublin and became involved in the Irish Rising. He fled to America with a price on his head and spent some time on Broadway before making a move towards the film industry that was thriving in Hollywood. He was 6' 1'' and worked for Warner at the same time as James Cagney, Edward G.Robinson and Humphrey Bogart. His first film was in Rin Tin Tin in 1931 and some of his better known films were Gold is Where You Find It (1938), Dark Victory and The Rains Came (1939) The Spiral Staircase (1946) and Death of a Scoundrel (1956). This was his last film but he appeared in some TV work such as Fireside Theatre and a starring role in Wire Service. Born Again (1978) was his last work. George Brent was married to Ruth Chatterton (1932 - 1934) (divorced) Constance Worth (1937 - 1937) (divorced ) Ann Sheridan (1942 - 1943 ) (divorced).

George Brent's marriage to concert pianist Mary Astor is annulled, allowing him to marry the one he really loves, Bette Davis, and Astor to pursue her career. Aviator Brent is then thought dead in a plane crash overseas. Astor (whose performance earned her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, her only recognition from the Academy!) learns she's pregnant by Brent and tells Davis, who then convinces Astor to let her adopt it and pretend it's her own. Though they've been rivals, they go away together to a remote location until Astor can give birth. Lots of wonderful (caustic) dialogue between the two ladies. Grant Mitchell plays Astor's manager; Jerome Cowan plays Brent's lawyer; Hattie McDaniel plays Davis's domestic help.
In 1760, George Brent is residing at the plantation Woodstock, which is located in the same region as the home of his grandfather in the 1600s. Brent had met and married Catherine Trimmingham in Bermuda in about 1730. Together, George and Catherine Brent have seven children: Sarah, the eldest, who comes to wed George Mason IV; two sons; and four other daughters. Within six years of their marriage, the couple has moved to Virginia (actually moved back, in George’s case).
