Geology (from Greek: γη, [G]e, "earth"; and λόγος, logos, "speech" lit. to talk about the earth) is the science and study of the solid matter that constitutes the Earth. Encompassing such things as rocks, soil, and gemstones, geology studies the composition, structure, physical properties, history, and the processes that shape Earth's components. It is one of the Earth sciences. Geologists have established the age of the Earth at about 4.6 billion (4.6x109) years, and have determined that the Earth's lithosphere, which includes the crust, is fragmented into tectonic plates that move over a rheic upper mantle (asthenosphere) via processes that are collectively referred to as plate tectonics. Geologists help locate and manage the Earth's natural resources, such as petroleum and coal, as well as metals such as iron, copper, and uranium. Additional economic interests include gemstones and many minerals such as asbestos, perlite, mica, phosphates, zeolites, clay, pumice, quartz, and silica, as well as elements such as sulfur, chlorine, and helium.
GIF Image (600x292) Geology is the comprehensive study of the solid Earth, atmosphere, ocean, other planets, and the fossil record of life. It ... encompasses the study of the effects of human activities on the Earth's environment and the availability and extraction of natural resources. Earth science is interdisciplinary, and the study of geology frequently employs tools, concepts, and theories from mathematics and the other natural sciences, including chemistry, biology, and physics. Geologists work to solve problems of local and global perspectives related to all Earth systems. The study of minerals, rocks, and fossils continues to be an essential and exciting component of a geologist's training.
The Geology program exposes students to the theory and application of a wide range of disciplines within the geosciences. Students will acquire a strong background in the basic sciences as they address geological problems using the tools of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. The curriculum focuses on the composition, structure, history and dynamics of the Earth’s crust. Hilo’s unique natural setting on the slope of an active volcano makes it an ideal place to experience firsthand the more dynamic aspects of geology.

Geology (PDF) - The Associate of Science Transfer Degree in Geology offered by Ohlone College is designed to prepare students for studying Geology at most universities. The core courses required in the AS Degree in Geology will fulfill the lower division requirements for most campuses of the UC and CSU systems. This program will enable students to develop a strong foundation in geology, physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Furthermore, the theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills acquired by students in this program will ... enhance their success with obtaining entry-level jobs that require two years of college-level science and math.
