Geoffrey Rush was a star of the Australian stage for two decades before his Oscar-winning performance in Shine (1996) made him an international movie star. Since then the classically trained actor has appeared in dozens of films and earned two more Oscar nominations, for Shakespeare in Love (1998, with Gwyneth Paltrow) and Quills (2000). Not movie-star handsome, with a lumpy face that shows passion, humor and guile, Rush is known for his many appearances in period pieces, including Elizabeth (1998, starring Cate Blanchett) and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003, with Johnny Depp) and the sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007). Rush has ... appeared in modern comedies and dramas, from Mystery Men (1999, starring Ben Stiller) to Steven Spielberg's Munich (2005, with Eric Bana). His other films include Frida (2002, starring Salma Hayek), Finding Nemo (2003, with Ellen Degeneres) and The Banger Sisters (2002, with Susan Sarandon).

Geoffrey Rush etched a memorable portrait of Elizabeth’s great adviser Walsingham in "Elizabeth.†The opportunity to take the character further than had been explored in "Elizabeth†was a determining factor in Rush’s decision to return to the role. The Oscar winner was more than eager to again plumb the depths of such a powerful man, whom some considered as slippery as he was savvy. Rush comments, "Walsingham was the great spymaster. He moved his way into a very powerful position in Elizabeth’s court and, by the 1580s, he was masterminding one of the greatest espionage networks throughout Europe. He was an intellectual of that age and was the person that created the powerful notion of the ruler being a divine figure. He was a person of great discipline and control, as was his Queen.†Geoffrey Rush delivers another stellar performance in "Elizabeth: The Golden Age.†Here’s more of what he had to tell us about his new film:

Recent Golden Globe winner Geoffrey Rush, in town to help publicise the US release of the Australian film Swimming Upstream, appears to be eventually set for both Pirates of the Caribbean films. Talking exclusively the actor says while both Pirates sequels are not a sure thing for the Oscar winning actor, he is keeping himself available. It is not an official announcement, but at the moment I am on hold until there is a date somewhere late January where I think they are going to role out the schedule and the scripts. They have got a big job ahead of them, as they are going to shoot two and three together for logistical reasons and they are certainly determined not to make it a sausage machine project. It seems they are very keen on expanding the possibility of what Barbossa and Jack Sparrow and all the characters get involved in, and I think they are going to take into some quite fantastical and surprisingly new directions, says Rush, excitedly.
