Rush was born in 1951 in Toowoomba, Australia. He grew up in anonymity, a place he would remain for most of his life and career. He graduated from the University of Queensland with a degree in the arts. Further study took him to Paris where he worked on his pantomime skills for two years at the Jacques Lecoq School of Mime. He returned to Australia to share the stage in Waiting for Godot with his roommate and fellow struggling actor, Mel Gibson. He appeared in a few movies through out the 80’s but it was clear his focus was on the theatre.
