There is no doubt that Geoffrey Bodine was destined to do one thing in his life, and that was race cars. As the oldest of three racing Bodine brothers from Chemung, New York, Geoffrey’s path was paved by his father and grandfather, who built the Chemung Speedrome. By the age of five, Bodine was racing at the family track with micro-midgets. The racing reputation of Geoffrey Bodine grew out of NASCAR’s Northeast Modified division. This was a hotbed of great racing talent and saw Bodine win against the likes of legends like Richie Evans, Ron Bouchard, and Jimmy Spencer. By 1978, Bodine won more races in the modified division than any other driver in its history.

Geoffrey Bodine has always taken an interest in the U. S. Olympic games, but the bobsled team interests him in particular. A few years back, the U. S. was in the throes of a decades-long losing streak, and Bodine thought he could help. Using the same team of engineers that designs his winning racecars, he designed a bobsled. He had the sled tested for speed and safety and found that it had more structural integrity than the sleds being used in the Olympic Games. Because the sled tested so well, he had several of them made and absorbed the cost himself, letting the drivers use them at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Bodine was thrilled when they won every competition they entered.

On the restart, Bodine led Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, Mark Martin, Dick Trickle and Morgan Shepherd into the first turn. The confusion had lasted 17 laps. When the final green flag fell, there were still 62 laps left, plenty of time for those behind Bodine to catch and pass him. But with fresher tires and a head start on the field, Bodine had a decided advantage.
