In the past, Geodon was associated with a risk of a heart rhythm irregularity by increasing the QTc interval (on an EKG). Several studies since then have shown that the risk of this is very slight and comparable to the risk from other antipsychotics, but it is a factor that must be considered by doctors and patients. Patients should have an EKG performed before starting Geodon to rule out underlying cardiac problems.

Geodon has ... been included in an article (Keck et al., 2000) showing reduction of suicide risk in schizophrenia patients. The authors reviewed the available literature regarding the efficacy of clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine and ziprasidone (Geodon) in the treatment of depression, hostility and suicidality in patients with schizophrenia. Co-occurring depression, in particular, has been associated with suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and suicide. These studies "suggest that treatment with clozapine or olanzapine may significantly reduce suicidality in patients with schizophrenia," the authors said in their conclusion.
