Geodon: Patients
built 642 days ago
Patients already diagnosed with diabetes are warned to closely monitor glucose levels if they must undergo treatment with Geodon. Warnings have ... been issued to people with risk factors for diabetes, such as obesity or family history of diabetes. At-risk patients beginning treatment with Geodon should participate in a fasting blood glucose test prior to the start of the Geodon prescription and then undergo periodic blood sugar testing throughout Geodon treatment to reassess diabetes risk.

Stanford University is examining the use of ziprasidone (Geodon) in the treatment of patients currently experiencing possible weight gain due to use of a mood stabilizer and/or an antipsychotic in Bipolar Disorder. In this study, after an initial evaluation phase, patients will be instructed to replace Geodon for their current stable medication regimen for a period of 12 weeks while being monitored by a psychiatrist using clinical and laboratory measures. For additional information, please contact Kristine Keller at (650) 498-4968.

An analysis was conducted of pooled data from three, double-blind studies involving Geodon use by patients with bipolar mania who ... had dysphoria or depressive symptoms. Patients given Geodon showed significantly more rapid and consistent improvements in depressive symptoms than those given placebo or the antipsychotic haloperidol (Haldol). On a standard rating scale for depression, patients given Geodon showed significant improvements versus placebo starting at day four of treatment and at all subsequent visits; those given haloperidol did not show statistically significant improvement at the study end point.

Anyone taking Geodon - or any other antipsychotic - for the treatment of schizophrenia or bipolar mania should pay attention to possible symptoms of diabetes. These include: polydipsia (excessive thirst), polyuria (excessive need to urinate), polyphagia (excessive hunger) and weakness. If symptoms appear, it is up to the physician and patient to decide whether symptoms and risk of diabetes are great enough to require discontinuation of the Geodon treatment.

[P]atients taking Zyprexa had significant increases versus baseline in average body weight ( +11 lbs ) compared with a mean weight loss of -1.8 pounds for patients on Geodon. Zyprexa patients ... experienced significant increases from baseline in total cholesterol ( +13.0 mg/dL ), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ( +17.0 mg/dL ) and fasting insulin ( +2.0 µU/mL ); there were no significant changes seen with Geodon.
