Geodon: Drugs
built 640 days ago
Geodon is an oral as well as injectable drug that is used for treating psychoses, for example, schizophrenia. Although the mechanism of geodon action is not known, similar other anti-psychotics, it inhibits communication between nerves of the brain. It does this by blocking receptors on the nerves for several neurotransmitters, the chemicals that nerves take to communicate with each other. It is thought that the beneficial effect of geodon is due to its blocking of dopamine as well as serotonin receptors. It as well as inhibits the re-uptake of serotonin as well as norepinephrine by nerves in the brain similar some anti-depressant drugs. Geodon is associated with little or no weight gain, a feature that distinguishes it from other anti-psychotic drugs.
Ziprasidone (marketed as Geodon, Zeldox) was the fifth atypical antipsychotic to gain FDA approval (February 2001). In the United States, Ziprasidone is Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, and the intramuscular injection form of ziprasidone is approved for acute agitation in schizophrenic patients. Ziprasidone has ... received approval for acute treatment of mania associated with bipolar disorder. The brand name Geodon has been suggested to bring to mind the phrase 'down (don) to earth (geo)' referring to the goals of the medication.
Testing has shown that ziprasidone (the active component of Geodon) has a greater capacity to prolong the QT/QTc interval of an electrocardiogram compared to several other antipsychotic drugs. This effect is important because it is associated with torsade de pointes-type arrhythmia, a potentially fatal polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (rapid heart rate), and sudden death.

Do not take Geodon if you have the heartbeat irregularity known as QT prolongation, have had a recent heart attack, or suffer from heart failure. You'll ... need to avoid this drug if it gives you an allergic reaction.
In some people with heart problems or a slow heartbeat, Geodon can cause serious and potentially fatal heartbeat irregularities. The chance of a problem is greater if you are taking a water pill (diuretic) or a medication that prolongs a part of the heartbeat known as the QT interval. Many of the drugs prescribed for heartbeat irregularities prolong the QT interval and should never be combined with Geodon. Other drugs to avoid when taking Geodon include chlorpromazine, gatifloxacin, mefloquine, mesoridazine, moxifloxacin, pentamidine, pimozide, soarfloxacin, tacrolimus, and thioridazine. If you're uncertain about the risks of any drug you're taking, be sure to check with your doctor before combining it with Geodon.
