Genital Herpes is a Std (Sexually Transmitted Disease) caused by a virus called Herpes Simplex virus. There are two different types of the Herpes virus, the one that generally targets the mouth (HSV-1) and the one that generally targets the genitals (HSV-2). Herpes Simplex Virus 1 is essentially the cold sores people get on there lips and mouth. Which really shouldn't be considered an Std since it can be contracted in many ways other than sexually. Genital Herpes is an extremely common Std with 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men currently infected with the std in the USA.

Having Genital Herpes does not mean your sex life is over, but it is an incurable, contagious infection. It can be transmitted through oral sex, and can be transmitted when you have no symptoms. Condoms will help reduce this risk but may not cover all infected areas. So, when deciding to have sex, you and your partner will have to accept a certain amount of risk. There are several things that a patient may do to lessen the pain of genital sores. Wearing loose fitting clothing and cotton underwear is helpful. Removing clothing or wearing loose pajamas while at home may reduce pain. Soaking in a tub of warm water and using a blow dryer on the "cool" setting to dry the infected area is helpful. Putting an ice pack on the affected area for 10 minutes, followed by five minutes off and then repeating this procedure may relieve pain. A zinc sulfate ointment may help to heal the sores.
