Biosyn is developing a number of microbicides for the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including chlamydia, genital herpes and papilloma virus. Each of these compounds is in a different stage of development, with the company's leading microbicide candidate, Savvy(R) (1.0% C31G vaginal gel) entering Phase III clinical trials early in 2003 for contraception, HIV prevention, and prevention of other STDs.

Fact: Condoms reduce the risk of transmitting genital herpes... they do not entirely remove the risk. This is because the condom may not cover all potential sites of viral shedding, may not remain in the same place during sex or may break.

Common triggers of a genital herpes attack include physical and mental stress, excessive cold or heat and local genital trauma (for example, through vigorous sex or masturbation). Avoiding these as best you can and keeping your immune system strong - by getting plenty of rest, not smoking or drinking too much alcohol, and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables - will give you the best chance of avoiding a recurrence.

Since the genital herpes virus can be transmitted through oral sex as well as vaginal sex, it is ... possible to have caught the virus from a cold sore on your partner's mouth or face. It is possible to pass the virus on even if they did not have a cold sore present at the time of contact.
