Genital Herpes: Outbreaks
built 643 days ago
Once you have been exposed to the virus through direct skin-to-skin contact, it can take anywhere from two to 20 days before your first episode of symptoms of genital herpes will occur. While the first outbreak of herpes is usually the worst one you will experience, as much as 60% of those infected with the virus will fail to notice any symptoms because the outbreak is so mild. Even if you do not have any symptoms, though, you can still pass on the virus to your sexual partners.

Genital herpes is a lifelong disease that causes painful outbreaks of blisters in the genital area. Herpes simplex virus can infect men and women equally, but the pattern of infection is different.
Herpes tests cannot always show if you have a primary genital herpes outbreak or you have been infected in the past. Occasionally a test result can be negative even though the person has herpes.
It is not yet known if all genital herpes drugs are safe for pregnant women to take. Some doctors may recommend acyclovir be taken either as a pill or through an IV (a needle into a vein) during pregnancy. Let your doctor know if you have genital herpes, even if you are not having an outbreak. He or she will help you manage it safely during pregnancy.

A recurrent infection is defined as a genital HSV outbreak in a woman with homologous IgG antibodies to the HSV type. Recurrent infections occur most frequently during the first 3 months after a primary infection, especially with HSV-2. Approximately 15% of all pregnant women with a history of genital HSV infection experience recurrent lesions at delivery. Recurrent HSV outbreaks may be symptomatic or asymptomatic. When present, most symptoms are localized (eg, pain, itching, vaginal discharge).

Fact: Symptoms, such as sores, tend to go away after an outbreak of genital herpes. If sores do not go away, it is probably not genital herpes. After several years, you may experience fewer outbreaks or no outbreaks at all. It is possible, though, to have an outbreak without any symptoms.
