Genetics, a discipline of biology, is the science of heredity and variation in living organisms.[1][2] Knowledge of the inheritance of characteristics has been implicitly used since prehistoric times for improving crop plants and animals through selective breeding. However, the modern science of genetics, which seeks to understand the mechanisms of inheritance, only began with the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-1800s.[3] Although he did not know the physical basis for heredity, Mendel observed that inheritance is fundamentally a discrete process with specific traits that are inherited in an independent manner — these basic units of inheritance are now called genes.

The Department of Genetics, established in 2000, is one of six basic science departments in the School of Medicine. The Department continues to grow and develop through the efforts of 10 faculty, 11 research staff, four administrative staff, 15 students and nine conjoint faculty. The process of recruiting new faculty is continuing in partnership with other Departments and Centers of Excellence. We recently added Dr. Wanguo Liu to our faculty and are in the process of recruiting two new faculty members.

Along with its planned human trials for its therapeutics, CellCyte Genetics intends to develop a new stem cell cultivation device or "bioreactor" unit for which CellCyte Genetics owns the worldwide patent and rights. The Company plans to market the device for applications that will require cells to be grown under regulated oxygen concentrations, e.g. the replication of stem cells and the culture of pancreatic islet cells prior to transplantation into diabetic patients.

DeCode Genetics announced today that a mid-stage study of its arterial thrombosis treatment showed positive results in a Phase II study. The company says it expects DG041 will make it possible to block the formation of blood clots mediated through inflammation in atherosclerotic plaques but without increasing bleeding risk. With the development of DG041, DeCode is taking aim at drugs such as Plavix and aspirin, the current market leaders of oral anti-platelet therapy.

Genetics may ... be defined as the science that deals with the nature and behavior of the genes, the fundamental hereditary units. From this point of view, evolution is seen as the study of changes in the gene composition of populations, whereas embryology is the study of the effects of the genes on the development of the organism. See also Gene action; Population genetics.
