Magnuson, 50, has more than 19 years of experience in genetics. Prior to joining the University of North Carolina as the Sarah Graham Kenan professor and chair of the department of genetics in 2000, Magnuson held a number of positions in genetics over his sixteen years at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine. He continues to serve as adjunct professor at CWRU. From 1982 to 1984, he was the assistant research geneticist in the department of pediatrics at the University of California in San Francisco.

It is expected that a student enrolling in the Genetics Program will have completed one year of physics and biology, two years of chemistry, an introductory genetics course, and mathematics through calculus. For the MS and Ph.D. degrees in genetics, students take the core genetics courses, biochemistry (equivalent to BB 550, BB 551), statistics, and graduate-level genetics courses chosen from the list prepared by the genetics faculty. Students participate in research designed to prepare them for careers in genetics. The director of the Genetics Program is Walt Ream, Ph.D.

Although geneticists originally studied inheritance in a wide range of organisms, researchers began to specialize in studying the genetics of a particular subset of organisms.
