Geneforge 2 is the all-new sequel to the fantasy hit Geneforge. Geneforge 2 lets you choose whether to be good or evil and to chase your goals with your own army of lethal, totally obedient, mutant creatures. It ... features a cunning enemy AI with foes who can go on patrols, stalk you, and run for help. A huge and open story line has many dungeons, puzzles, characters, and factions to join. You have the freedom to choose your own path and to decide how the story will turn out.Note: Version 1.0.2 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

The Geneforge is a device which has essentially the same effect as a skill canister, but on a much larger scale. Being so powerful, it is very dangerous, and can only be used very carefully with very protective equipment. To use it otherwise results in instant death. In the first and fourth games, the Geneforge is usable by humans (and ... the player), but in Geneforge 2 and 3, it could only be used by specific intelligent creations.

Geneforge 2 has a huge and open storyline. You can join with any of several factions and reach dozens of different endings. Help the rebels, or fight them. Fight your enemies, or use stealth and diplomacy. When you finish the game, start over, join a different group, and experience a completely different game. No matter what you choose, Geneforge 2 offers an enormous adventure with plenty of replay value.

Combat in Geneforge is turn-based. Each character in the player's party receives action points at the beginning of the player's turn, the number received is dependant on the items the player character has equipped and the skills the character or creations possess. Each action uses a specific number of points, for example, moving one square takes a single point and attacks or spells take five. Attacking or spellcasting with fewer than ten action points immediately ends the character's turn, otherwise a character can continue to act until they run out of points. Most enemies will attack the player on sight, retreating in terror if they reach a certain threshold of damage without being killed. Other specialized behaviors are ... present, including creatures which call for help, or creatures which act as sentries and retreat to an ambush location when threatened.

Among many other things, Geneforge represents Spiderweb’s continuing dedication to evolve and perfect its products with every release, and in no other aspect is this more obvious than within the realm of control. Whereas previous titles relied almost exclusively upon the keyboard, one could practically explore all of Sucia Island using nothing but the mouse. Movement, spells and creature-making require nothing more than a simple button-click, which is distinctly more intuitive and straightforward. Similarly, NPCs and static objects need only to be clicked to be spoken to, opened, or read. You ... may now scroll the screen outside of your character’s range, something for which the new clickable mini-map is extremely useful. There are even a handful of hotkeys to speed things up if you so desire, though it’s a shame that certain items were left out: it can be a real pain to be forced to repeat the process of clicking on your living tools (Geneforge’s lockpick) and then on the locked object fifteen to thirty times when your character has a terrible Mechanics skill.
