Don't let the graphics fool you - the Geneforge series has some of the best rpg's around. Jeff Vogel's writing is smart and evocative. This is a true roleplaying game - your actions have consequences and the people react to you accordingly. The demo is huge and gives a great feel for the game. If you haven't tried it yet, you're in for a treat!

As in the first Geneforge game, the player begins as an apprentice Shaper beginning their training. They are sent with a Shaper Agent to assess the situation of the failing Shaper colony Drypeak. Once they arrive, they begin to find that there is much more here than one would think. One of the town's leaders, Barzahl, has turned against the Shapers and has founded a town with those loyal to him, the Barzites. He has begun crafting magical canisters which rewrite the body of the Shaper who uses it, making them artificially stronger. Past Drypeak there are towns of serviles, Shaper-made servants who are bred for mindless obedience.

The experience you’ll face within Geneforge depends largely on the type of character you select at the game’s outset. Though there are only three character classes, there is a great deal of variety between them. For starters, there’s the physically weak Shaper, whose specialty lies within the creation of various beings to do their bidding and to protect them in combat – and while all outsiders know those within your sect as Shapers, there are further distinctions. For instance, there’s the second character class, the Guardian, who traditionally viewed the burly defender of the Shaper sect; as a result, combat skills are easier and cheaper to increase, though at the cost of lessened magical power. Finally, there’s the stealthy Agent, who relies upon the shadowy arts, diplomacy, and spells instead of creatures to mete out the will of the Shapers. As each one of these three characters is distinctly different in their strengths and weaknesses, each plays completely differently, and may choose to approach a given situation in different ways.

Geneforge 3's graphics aren't up to par with newer games, but they don't make everything difficult to see, either. You can say with certainty what most everything is. "Hey, that's a woman!" "Hey, that's a red velicoraptor!" And so on. The music is extremely minimal, mostly related to sound effects and the like, so listening to something else while playing doesn't take anything away from the game.
