Gender Differences in Susceptibility to Environmental Factors: A Priority Assessment - Workshop Report cellular level. In addition, there is much to be learned from animal models, not only from the knockout mice (as described in the workshop summary) but ... from gene insertion and substitution techniques (e.g., so-called "knock in" mice and "hit and run" experiments). At the same time, however, new techniques are needed to validate animal models of human disorders; assistance in translating those validation techniques into simple tests that can be used in the field are equally necessary. For these reasons, basic researchers should look for the broader implications of the mechanistic research conducted at the molecular, cellular, and animal levels. In particular, sponsoring agencies should encourage the development of animal models that are directly relevant to (1) gender differences in susceptibility and severity and (2) human exposures and diseases. A handful of other questions, reported in Table 4, sought to tap gender differences which might be relevant to VR design. Females significantly more than males were found to dislike computers and technology (even in an introductory technology class). Females are less likely than males to say they "play" as much as adults as they did when they were children. Females get engrossed in a movie plot moreso than males do. They are more likely than males to get lost in a day dream. Females change channels less often when watching TV and they play fewer arcade and video games and other games.

Today, the results of the first national survey to explore gender differences in ADHD are being released. Gender differences are not the only differences relevant to the relationship between acceptability of sensitive ad content and a propensity to skip ads. Those on the coasts tend to find these ads more acceptable, with Northeasterners especially of that opinion. At the same time, Northeasterners are least likely to skip commercials: Only 24 percent say they are almost certain to do so, 5 to 10 points below the figures registered in any other region. But among Northeasterners who find at least one of the specific listed ads unacceptable, the percentage who skip commercials exceeds by 12 points the comparable figure among Northeasterners who find the ads acceptable (33 percent vs. 21 percent).

A nationwide survey about gender differences in ADHD released in 2002, found that girls with ADHD face greater impairment in areas of social development including self-esteem, social relationships, and family relationships than boys with the disorder. Findings ... suggest that gender has important implications for diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. The survey was conducted by Harris Interactive and sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

Research on gender differences in behavior toward computers has increased in the past 20 years. Numerous articles have been written focusing on differences regarding computer aptitude and actual computer use. Kay (1992) defined aptitude in respect to general application software, awareness, experience, terminology, general programming, word processing, and games.
