The school system itself plays a significant role in creating and maintaining gender differences. For example, textbooks often represent the gender bias present in society's view of the technical fields. Teaching style ... perpetuates the gender difference. A study conducted by the American Association of University Women revealed that teachers tend to focus more attention on boys, directing more encouragement to them, while girls are often overlooked in class. In light of these results, teachers are apparently unaware of their biased actions. Traditional teacher training tends to cater to boys' interests and behaviors as a means of keeping classroom order.

Like most of the major religions, Christianity is a highly patriarchal faith, starting with God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son but ... continuing right down through the popes, Martin Luther and Billy Graham. Bibles’ use of the singular-masculine pronoun syntax of traditional English has complemented the male dominance. Transsexuals are transgender people who live or wish to live full time as members of the gender opposite to their birth sex. Biological females who wish to live and be recognized as men are called female-to-male (FTM) transsexuals or transsexual men. Biological males who wish to live and be recognized as women are called male-to-female (MTF) transsexuals or transsexual women. Transsexuals usually seek medical interventions, such as hormones and surgery, to make their bodies as congruent as possible with their preferred gender. The process of transitioning from one gender to the other is called sex reassignment or gender reassignment.

Since gender isn't readily apparent (unless specified) in online communication, can one determine another person's gender just by reading their written words? Susan Herring thinks so. In a 1994 talk at a panel called Making the Net *Work*, she said that men and women have recognizably different styles in posting to the Internet. She backed up this claim with research where she analyzed messages posted by men and women to various newsgroups. Read a transcript of her talk for all the details.
