Caesar's return to Gaul from Britain was a period of deep personal crisis. In the letters waiting upon his return were the news of the deaths of two of the most important people in his life: his daughter Julia, and his mother Aurelia. He seems to have become careless in taking care of his armies for winter quarters. His sloppiness cost the lives of at least 10,000 men. He drowned his sorrow by fighting and taking the blood of the Gauls. He waged a war of extermination against the rebellious Eburones and bridged the Rhine for a second raid in 53.

Gaul — about whom French rival Raphaël Geminiani once said, “he has the skin of a hippo” — plowed a lone furrow through the tempest. He arrived at the summit finish almost eight minutes ahead of the second man, Alessandro Fantini, and 12:15 ahead of defending champion Magni. His face a wrinkled mess, his hands and feet turned blue, Gaul had won the stage and taken the Giro lead by 3:27 over Magni. Never in the history of the Italian race had one man come from so far back to win the overall title in a single day. Gaul had to have his clothes cut from his frigid body before he was immersed in a hot bath at his hotel. Two days later he was crowned the champion of the 1956 Giro d’Italia.

While wintering in Gaul at Bibracte, the revolt started in full effect once again. Caesar marched to the territory of the Bituriges and brought them to submission within 40 days. Caesar returned to Bibracte by February 51 BC and offered his men 200 sesterces per legionary and 2000 per Centurion as a reward for their continuing sacrifice and hardship. Soon after returning ... the beaten Bituriges were under assault from the Carnutes, and Caesar marched back to their lands again. Decisively routing the Carnutes, the Bellovaci were the next source of trouble. In mid winter, Caesar's allies the Remi were under pressure from these Bellovaci and Caesar marched to the lands of the Seussiones to meet them.

On the 253km, eight-hour stage, Gaul attacked early over the Col des Aravis, and never stopped increasing his lead on the Télégraphe and Galibier climbs. At 5-foot-8 and 140 pounds, Gaul was a born climber, and his fast-pedaling style (decades before Lance Armstrong brought high-cadence climbing back into style) was irresistible. He ended that stage almost 14 minutes ahead of race favorites Louison Bobet of France, Jean Brankart of Belgium and Hugo Koblet of Switzerland, and moved into third place overall. He ended the 1955 Tour as the King of the Mountains and in third overall, behind Bobet and Brankart.
