In September 1986, Gatlinburg was the site of the "Tattoo Eddie Murders", where two innocent hotel attendants were slain by an Atlanta man, Eddie Harris (known as "Tattoo Eddie" due to his 134 tattoos) and three accomplices. The incident gained notoriety due to the fact that it occurred in the otherwise peaceful community.[41]
