Mark Dixon (Dana Andrews), a New York cop with an obsessive vendetta against gangster Scalise (Gary Merrill), is investigating the murder of a rich Texan at Scalise's illegal dice joint. Already under caution for being too rough with his suspects, Dixon is called off Scalise's scent, but when he visits a possible witness called Paine (Craig Stevens), he strikes the drunken Paine in self-defense and accidentally kills him. In a panic, Dixon dumps the body in the river, only to be assigned to find Paine's killer. Soon he is falling in love with Paine's beautiful, estranged wife Morgan (Gene Tierney), and desperately trying to find a way not only to stop her innocent father Jiggs (Tom Tully) from being found guilty of murdering Paine, but ... to redeem himself.
During the filming of All About Eve, the attraction between director Bill Sampson (Gary Merrill) and his leading lady (Bette Davis) led to an off-screen romance as well. Although Merrill and Davis were both married to others in 1950, by July 28, 1950, 34-year-old Merrill and 42-year-old Davis had won divorces from their respective spouses and were married to each other. They adopted two children, Margot and Michael, and eventually divorced in 1960.
Gary Merrill was born August 2, 1915 in Hartford Connecticut. He began his career acting in summer stock plays. He married Barbara Leeds, an actress, and then served a brief stint in the army. After the army, he landed in New York where he was chosen to join the already popular play "Born Yesterday". In 1950 he was chosen to play the part of Bill Sampson in the movie "All About Eve". It would be his first time meeting Bette Davis and they became an instant couple.
From 1994 through 2003, Merrill served as head coach at Northern Durham and guided the Knights, one of the Rockets’ fiercest rivals in football, to a 102-20 overall record. That mark included nine Piedmont Athletic Conference championships and only three league losses. Merrill’s Knights posted four undefeated regular seasons during that span and went to the state 4-A playoffs each season, including gaining a berth in the regional finals in 2003.
