Dourdan stopped using drugs and drinking alcohol in his twenties, without having to seek help from a rehabilitation clinic. He began acting again and won roles in off-Broadway shows. He ... studied at New York's Strasberg Institute. His first big break came when he was cast in the Cosby Show television spin-off A Different World as con artist Shazza Zulu. Dourdan appeared on the popular series from 1991 to 1993. He also appeared on the TV show The Good Fight (1992) and on the 1993 HBO mini-series Laurel Avenue.

Dourdan got his start in a recurring role on NBC's A Different World. More film and TV work followed, including his current role on the CBS hit CSI. Dourdan is often branded by his striking good looks. But, what many fans don't know is that he's an accomplished musician. Under a pseudonym, he's released projects in the U.K. and Europe. Dourdan says he tries to put out good music and have people make their judgment based on the music, not his notoriety as an actor.

Gary cleaned up his and act and started focusing on his career doing regional theatre off Broadway and ... working several jobs in between DJ, doorman, cook to make ends meet. He also ventured into modelling appearing in several magazine and books. In 1991, while on holiday in Paris with his then girlfriend Roshumba, he bumped into Debbie Allen, the actress and director of the Cosby spin-off "A Different World". He started sending her tapes of his work in theatre and eventually she offered him the role of "Shazza Zulu", a con artist in the series.
