Gary Burghoff: Radar Love
built 628 days ago
Gary Burghoff continued his role of Walter "Radar" O'Reilly in this pilot for a potential series. Although no longer using his M*A*S*H nickname, Walter was still aware of things before they happened. As a rookie cop, Walter had to deal with a variety of problems as he learned the ropes. The half-hour pilot only aired on the East Coast.
A: Yes, a couple of the fingers on Gary Burghoff's left hand are smaller than normal. This is well hidden from the audience though, as just about every scene has Radar conveniently covering up his left hand or holding something with it.

Home Gary was the only actor in Twentieth Century Fox's hit film M*A*S*H who was asked to reprise his character for the extremely successful television series. When bringing his character to the TV series, Burghoff said he had to "re-create the Radar character because he wasn't fully developed in the feature." It was Gary's idea to give "Radar" a real first name. He went to Writer/creative executive Larry Gelbart asking to give the character a first name and suggested "Walter" after a childhood friend Gary knew who never understood a joke made at someone else's expense. Gelbart ... based several of Radar's qualities upon those of Burghoff such as his love for nature. When visiting the Burghoff home in Malibu, Gelbart saw the wildlife sanctuary which Gary and his then wife Janet maintained in their backyard.
A publicity photo from Gary's time on "The Little Bastards" In 1952, upon returning to his castle in Beverly Hills, Burghoff immediately set to work on his most ambitious project yet: Radar Love, a 45,397 movement symphony for 70 bugles and 500 electric guitars. This piece of music took him 10 years to complete, which is how experts explain the population boom around this time. Radar Love premiered November 12, 1963 at Carnegie Hall, and its initial performance is still occurring. Most people who have heard parts of it agree... that it was the birth of Rock 'n' Roll.
