Garth Brooks: Songs
built 132 days ago
Garthbrooks Garth Brooks started his first of five shows in two days at L.A.'s Staples Center right on time for CBS's live broadcast to all but the West Coast. Raising money for firefighters, Brooks did 12 tunes in the first hour - we were led to believe "Two of a Kind" and "Beaches of Cheyenne" were not aired - and then another 30 minutes before closing out with a 30 minute encore that included his performance, solo, of songs written by his heroes.
[O]f course, "good time" is written all over "Big Money," a tune Garth says would have fit easily on his 1989 self-titled debut. Written by Shawn Camp, Randy Hardison and Wynn Varble, this witty lyric is an instant grin-getter. "Rodeo or Mexico" is another turbo-charged, yet wry slice of life in the danger lane, something many of Garth's rodeo songs have explored. A Bryan Kennedy, Paul Kennerley, Garth Brooks tune, this is a bareback bronc ride of a song.
In August 1997 an estimated 750,000 people attended Garth Brooks' free concert in Central Park NY. Don McLean was Garth's special guest star and together they sang American Pie. Don was so nervous that he had the lyrics to the first verse of the song written out and attached to the top of his guitar!

It is wonderful to hear Garth on the radio again. More than a Memory is not hokey, the lyrics and strings are quite lovely. Garth has been in the music business too long to allow a “stinker” of a song be his first release in several years. Thrilled to hear his voice again, and have played the song several times.

Throughout the project, writers let Garth personalize a line or a verse, and those intimate moments are among the record's finest. For example, the Celtic-flavored "Pushing Up Daisies," tightly crafted by John Hadley, Gary Scruggs and Kevin Welch, suddenly makes a personal revelation that makes the song an emotional stunner.
