Garry Shandling (played by himself) was an actor hired by Wayne Federman to star in The Lazarus Bowl as an FBI agent "loosely based" on Fox Mulder alongside Téa Leoni as a character based on Dana Scully. Mulder was not entirely pleased that he was to be portrayed by Shandling, hoping instead for Richard Gere.

Garry Shandling is not typical leading-man material. Like most comics, he comes across as a dour man, though one with an inconspicuous face. His pet expression seems to be mild bewilderment tinged with the merest hint of sadness -- pained recalcitrance seems his metier.

In Garry Shandling v. Brad Grey, Mr. Shandling contended that his manager, Brad Grey, improperly leveraged his relationship with the actor to benefit Mr. Grey's personal business concerns, creating a conflict of interest. In Grey's dual role, Shandling contended, he was able to "triple-dip," taking excess fees out of Shandling's HBO series, "The Larry Sanders Show," and using Mr. Shandling's name to make large deals with ABC, MCA and Columbia pictures.
