The World Chess Championship 1984 match between Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov had many ups and downs, and a very controversial finish. Karpov started in very good form, and after nine games Kasparov was down 4-0 in a "first to six wins" match. Fellow players predicted he would be whitewashed 6-0 within 18 games.

LONDON -- World chess champion Garry Kasparov, who is playing the world on the Internet, said Friday it was tough trying to outsmart the World Wide Web's challengers, but remained confident of a win or draw. "The world turned out to be very smart...but it has a very difficult task to save the game," Kasparov told Reuters in Russian-accented English.

Garry Kasparov became the youngest world chess champion in 1985, a title that he held until 2000. Mr. Kasparov is the founder of political opposition groups in Russia that include United Civil Front and Other Russia, a coalition that he currently leads.
