When world chess champion Garry Kasparov was defeated in 1997 by chess- playing computer Deep Blue, it created much discussion around the fact that computers had finally dominated the game of chess. With another match between Kasparov and computer champion Deep Junior just weeks away, Arimaa will challenge the real intelligence of such game playing computers and spark further discussion about a computer's ability to think like a human.

It's been ten years that Garry Kasparov has held his title as World Chess Champion. This September, he will be defending his position again, this time against Vishwanathan Anand from India. The 20-game match will take place on the top floor of the World Trade Center in New York City and is scheduled to last from September 11 to October 13. The game's purse is $1.5 million.

Garry Kasparov (pronounced: Kas-PAH-rof) was born in 1963 in Baku, Azerbaijan. In 1980 he was the world junior champion, in 1981 the Soviet champion, and in 1985, at the age of 22, the youngest ever world chess champion, after defeating Anatoly Karpov. He has now been the top chess player in the world for 14 years and there are no signs of his winning streak stopping anytime soon.
