Garry Kasparov: Games
built 641 days ago
At the age of 21, Garry played for his first world title against the legendary Soviet player Anatoly Karpov. Both men played brilliant chess throughout the event, but the five-month, forty-eight-game marathon ended inconclusively. Citing exhaustion on the part of both players, World Chess Federation President Florencio Campomanes suddenly cancelled the remainder of the match without crowning a winner.
Garry Kasparov, the world's all-time top chess player lived up to his fame, as he defeated the European champion, Zurab Azmaiparashvili 5½-½ in six exhibition games. The clash, held at the picturesque village of Panormos, some 20 kilometres east of Rethymnon, in Crete, included two rapid and four blitz games. The two Grand Masters will ... be competing in the European Clubs Cups, scheduled to begin in Rethymnon on 28 September 2003.

After forced moves on both sides, Kasparov made a desperado move with his knight to double the World Team's pawns. Materially the game was still even, with a knight and two pawns balancing a rook. Positionally, the World Team had the disadvantages of doubled pawns and a centralized king, but the advantage of a lead in development and a central pawn mass. With no central pawns, Kasparov had no obvious way to expose the black king. In the judgement of most commentators, the World Team was at least equal, and it was perhaps even Kasparov who was fighting uphill.

The better-prepared Kramnik won Game 2 against Kasparov's Grünfeld Defence and achieved winning positions in Games 4 and 6. Kasparov made a critical error in Game 10 with the Nimzo-Indian Defence, which Kramnik exploited to win in 25 moves. As white, Kasparov could not crack the passive but solid Berlin Defence in the Ruy Lopez, and Kramnik successfully drew all his games as black. Kramnik won the match 8.5-6.5, and for the first time in 15 years Kasparov had no world championship title. He became the first player to lose a world championship match without winning a game since Emanuel Lasker lost to Capablanca in 1921.
"Some of the most impressive publishing work I have seen is represented by the two-volume set Garry Kasparov's Greatest Chess Games by Igor Stohl. These beautifully produced hardbacks are a worthy complement to Kasparov's own outstanding volumes on his great predecessors." - GM Raymond Keene, The Spectator
