Garibaldi: Rome
built 202 days ago
On May, 11th, Garibaldi docked at Marsala harbour without being disturbed by Bourbon that did not want to open fire because they did not want to hit the english watercrafts which were moored at the quayside. After having gathered volunteers in Marsala and delivered speeches (in this town the Heroe pronounced the famous sentence: "Rome or Death") he left again towards Salemi where he designated himself Dictator, in the king Vittorio Emanuele's name. Then he went on towards Calatafimi where he found the Bourbon defence.
After the war, Garibaldi led a political party that agitated for the capture of Rome, the peninsula's ancient capital. In 1867, he again marched on the city, but the Papal army, supported by a French auxiliary force, proved a match for his badly-armed volunteers. He was taken prisoner, held captive for a time, and then again returned to Caprera.
In spite of the government's official unwillingness to seize Rome by force, some members of the executive branch were fully in sympathy with Garibaldi's goals, and they furthered a second military effort. He was once again stopped... shortly after entering papal territory in October. It was ironic that when, in 1870, the Italian kingdom finally absorbed the remainder of the States of the Church, the great condottiere was not directly involved. He spent that year fighting for the French in the Franco-Prussian War.
