Although these numbers aren’t comforting, Gannett said newspaper revenue rose 6% to $1.7 billion. But on a pro forma basis, advertising revenue was down 1.8%. Gannett's shares declined $1.06, or 2%, to close at $57.76. Although Gannett’s newspapers are struggling to stay afloat, especially in the United Kingdom, its U.S. broadcasting results recently got a boost from its coverage of the winter Olympics.
Broadcasting revenues would have been 6.5 percent lower if Gannett had owned the same group of stations in both the second quarter of 2007 and 2006. Reported broadcasting expenses increased 4.6 percent in the quarter. However, on a pro forma basis, broadcasting costs would have been 1.9 percent lower. In the second quarter operating cash flow was $95.9 million for the broadcasting segment.
